After many months of being away, G/net has some catching up to do. Design changes, exclusive features, enhanced security, etc. The decision to bring back G/net was because OneClickWifi has gone down once again and that I needed a dedicated platform for Web Dev RPG.
Web Dev RPG will be tied to your G/net accounts. In addition, the main purpose of G/net is to be a gaming social community. Exchanging DS/Wii/3DS Friend Codes, Xbox Live Gamertags, PSN Identity, and Steam IDs. Not to mention the ability to challenge other players. It isn't limited to just gaming, but open to many other social functions.
G/net, which was the successor to DSiTabs/net (Created in January 2010), was created in June 2010 by Smalls. G/net did not last long, but nonetheless, it was still active. The site reached an astounding 6,000 users in less than a year, partly due to the success of DSiTabs/net. Users used the status, blogs, pages, profiles, and messaging to communicate with one another. Users would earn points that would determine their status in the community. From it's success on G/net, other sites began implanting those ideas and grew on the original principle. Most of these ideas are still used today! The relaunch of G/net will build upon what G/net used to be, but focus more on the gaming portion.
G/net will be gathering elements from a now defunct website, myWorldnet, which was also developed by Smalls. Most of the core elements from myWorldnet, such as the profiles and login system, will be moving over to G/net. The G/net relaunch will build on the foundation of what was the myWorldnet system while building new features and bringing back old features from the original G/net .The quality of the system behind the new G/net, which is now dubbed /net 3.0, will be far superior to the system that runs the old G/net, which is called /net 2.3.
Extra Info about the new update When I released G/net last June, I quickly rushed it as the successor to DSiTabs/net. Sure, it featured the same good old features of DSiTabs/net and had some "functional" gaming related features, but I didn't. As you all may know, G/net is short for myGamingnet... Where was the gaming?
That will all change with the G/net relaunch. It will incorporate those features we have all grown used to in all of these new sites (Oh dear, messages, status, blogs, etc.), but I will be putting more emphasis on gaming. One thing I have noticed about gaming-centric websites is that they usually put their emphasis on forums, mods, statuses, and other useless community features. Yes those are the most used functions, but that's something that needs to change.
One of the major new features I am designing for G/net are "Game Lobbies". Coming from the list of games tied to your profile, you can open up lobbies to challenge people (Or in the case of some games, meet up). Game Lobbies will close upon the user's request after they finalized their game(s). Users will then be asked to rate the users they just played against.
Another new feature that I am designing for G/net will be sharing "Replays". Users will be able to post gameplay videos, also called replays, to their profiles. The only way for users to do this though, is to post them to Youtube. You may wonder why I would add such a feature. Mind you, this is no longer just a DSi site and is being developed for the desktop platform first.
Lastly, there will be "Maintainers". This is a rather tedious task, especially for someone who runs the site all by himself. Maintainers are people who will add games to the "Game Library" so users can easily add games to their profile. Even regular users can help by suggesting the addition of a game.
For the 6,000+ users before... I have devised a plan to let you transfer your old accounts. Sadly, the only things that will transfer are your usernames and passwords (and that you were an original user :D).
If you can't tell, this is a rather huge project. It will take some time, but the end product will come out very nicely. Building the site from the ground up is rather annoying. The idea of the site is to not be designed for one demographic, but most them (I.E. PC, Wii, Xbox Live, PSN, DSi, 3DS, etc.). I am still looking at a July release, but if anything comes up... It will more than likely be released in September (I move to Auburn, AL in August and I will also be starting classes at Auburn University during that time).
If you want to suggest a feature, please comment here or email me at Smalls1652@gmail.com.
(From July 27th, 2011) Hey guys, just a quick update on the change of release dates. I have been bombarded with school work and whatnot. Yes, I am taking summer courses.
Not only am I being bombarded with school work, but I'm also being bombarded with personal matters... that relate to school. I am no longer going to be attending Auburn University in the Fall. I was accepted and then rejected of my in-state tuition appeal. Auburn's out-of-state tuition is ridiculously expensive (Try $23,000 EVERY semester) and the only way for me to get in-state tuition is to file taxes here in Alabama. The only way I can do that, is to work a full-time job for a year. Impossible? Yes.
There's nothing much I can do right now, but get a backup plan. This has taken a lot of my time lately (Yes, even my gaming has been ruined) and it's getting pretty stressful. I have finals in two weeks, with two tests in between. Don't expect G/net to launch this month, or next month. I haven't done much to it lately.
In regards to why it was "~July 2011" (or now "~September 2011"), the "~" means estimated.
